Diego Tancara (29) is a PhD student in Physics with a focus on Optics and Quantum Information, while José Fredes (26) recently graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering in Informatics and Computing. Their paths crossed a few years ago, and today they are an example of the joint and interdisciplinary work that U. Mayor aims to promote.

Led by Dr. Ariel Norambuena, an academic at the Multidisciplinary Center for Physics, the duo worked on Diego Tancara's thesis entitled "Quantum Machine Learning for Predicting Dynamical Properties of Quantum Systems."

The research has already been published on the British scientific site IOP Science, which highlighted the proposal to create data models related to dynamic phase transition. "In the model, we varied the magnetic field component since it is a usual control parameter. What we did was classify when these phenomena occur and when they do not," explains Dr. Ariel Norambuena.

Methodologies The work between the students was divided, allowing José Fredes to develop the classic Machine Learning algorithms, while Diego Tancara conducted studies defining the quantum Kernel function to determine the dynamic properties in quantum systems using artificial intelligence.

Regarding the joint work, José Fredes commented, "I met Diego in 2020 through a quantum research group. I was looking for something available to work on Machine Learning, and I feel that this research was a great opportunity. This relationship between undergraduate and PhD students is rare, so I feel I learned different perspectives on collaborating in academia."

On his part, Diego Tancara shared his perspective on the work, stating, "We started working on this research in 2021, and I feel I learned a lot because José is from Informatics and I am from Physics. There was a great synergy, and we both learned from each other's areas of expertise."

Dr. Norambuena concluded by saying, "The research among the three of us was very good because it brought together two disciplines and two different but complementary approaches to achieve the objectives."
