Semana de la Astronomía U. Mayor acercó la ciencia a los estudiantes y a la comunidad CMF | Universidad Mayor

"resounding success." That’s how the 2025 Astronomy Week organized by the Multidisciplinary Center for Physics (CMF) at Universidad Mayor was described. From March 19 to 21, students and the general public took part in various activities related to this fascinating science.

At different campuses across the Santiago site, attendees had the chance to learn about the five current astronomy research lines at the CMF, as well as the AstroPrinted project—a telescope built using 3D-printed parts, where students will participate in its design and automation. There were also solar observation sessions using a telescope funded by VcM, and contests to win a 3D-printed ALMA antenna made by Protolab, along with outreach materials provided by CMF, ESO, and NOIR.

Additionally, the four women members of the CMF participated in a panel discussion held at the Huechuraba Planetarium, in collaboration with ESO. “It was the first time each of us had the opportunity to share our stories to contribute to and inspire future generations,” highlighted Dr. Ximena Ramos.

The organizer mentioned that the students’ reception was very positive and enthusiastic. “They actively participated, asking questions and showing great interest and a genuine desire to learn more. The presence of students from different academic programs was something that brought us great joy, as one of our goals was to make astronomy more accessible across disciplines. This was an important milestone for the center, especially considering that Universidad Mayor does not currently offer a related degree. Seeing the strong interest that was sparked was truly heartwarming.”

She also expressed pride in being part, for the first time, of the national celebration coordinated by the Ministry of Science. “It allowed us to connect with a broader astronomical community and contribute to science outreach in the country. It also gave us a valuable platform to showcase the work we are doing at the university.”

Finally, Dr. Ramos hopes that this event “will be the beginning of an annual tradition at our university, and that we continue to grow and improve with each edition.”
